It is important to come into our office at least once every six months for a professional dental cleaning and exam. This will help our dentist locate dental issues and help prevent oral health problems. To ensure that you maintain good oral health, your dental care needs to extend to your home as well. That is why Dr. Robert P. Sherman educates his patients about dental hygiene in Leawood, Kansas. We encourage you to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy by brushing twice daily and flossing once a day.

Use a fluoride toothpaste when brushing, as fluoride helps protect your teeth against cavities. Brush your teeth with your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle where the teeth and gums meet. Use small circular movements, pressing firmly. Do not scrub, as this can scratch the tooth enamel and cause your gums to recede. Brush all surfaces of your teeth, paying special attention to the front and back teeth. To prevent bad breath, brush your tongue from back to front.

When flossing, gently work the floss between your teeth toward your gums. Move the floss around each tooth and gently guide it under the gum line. Moving the floss up and down several times will remove plaque.
